Where are we going?

While the original plan was to move abroad in Summer 2018 and live somewhere—probably Switzerland or Italy—June 2018 until January 2019, we obviously had to move onto Plan B after my cancer diagnosis. While uprooting your life and moving abroad can be a challenge with two kids in school, we thought our timing of doing it while Mel was beginning 8th grade would be ideal. She’d be back for the second half of 8th grade and then have a seamless transition into high school. One problem - my chemo schedule did not allow us to stick with that timing. So, we pushed it back to the Summer of 2019 and thought, why not do a full year instead of 6 months? I mean if we were pulling her out for her freshman year, what difference did a year make vs. 6 months? Both are inconvenient for a 14 year-old freshman.

So the discussions began - where will we go, and where do we want to live? The more we talked and researched, the more places we added to the list. Then we thought, why stay put? Why not travel for the year? We narrowed down our list and each family member got to choose 4 destinations. It became clear that a year was not going to be enough time for all the places we wanted to explore, but for now, we have a great list of destinations for the Johnston Family Adventures 2019 ~ 2020.
